Overview

Under the general direction of the Preschool/Childcare Director and consistent with the Christian mission and the policies and procedures set forth by the YMCA of Catawba Valley, the Preschool Assistant Director is responsible for supporting the overall leadership, operations, and compliance of the licensed full-day preschool program. This includes assisting with staff supervision, curriculum implementation, family engagement, filing in for staff in various capacities, and maintaining compliance with licensing and safety regulations. The Assistant Director acts as the Director in their absence and helps ensure a nurturing, developmentally appropriate, and inclusive learning environment for children ages 8 weeks to 5 years.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with daily operations and support the Preschool Director in managing center-wide programming and staff.
  • Act as the Director in the Director’s absence.
  • Ensure daily compliance with NC DCDEE licensing, sanitation, and health guidelines.
  • Assist in hiring, training, coaching, and evaluating preschool teachers and support staff.
  • Monitor classroom ratios and coverage to ensure safe and compliant operations.
  • Support curriculum implementation, teacher planning, and classroom observations.
  • Maintain accurate records including attendance, incident reports, and staff documentation.
  • Support communication and relationship-building with families through regular updates and parent meetings.
  • Assist with staff schedules, supply inventory, and facility maintenance needs.
  • Support implementation and documentation for CACFP and related nutrition programs.
  • Help monitor tuition and subsidy billing processes as directed by the Director.
  • Collaborate with the Director on continuous improvement efforts.
  • Communicate all program operations and licensing information to the Director.
  • Assist with budget development and implementation for the center.
  • Assist with Annual Campaign efforts.
  • Requires the use of a personal vehicle to travel between assigned programs within the region; may also require travel across the YMCA of Catawba Valley Program assignments are subject to change based on organizational needs.
  • Any duties assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Education and Experience:
    • Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field required; equivalent experience may be considered.
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience in licensed child care settings.
    • Level I or II Early Childhood Administrator Credential preferred.
    • Experience supporting daily center operations and staff supervision.
  • Knowledge:
    • Working knowledge of NC DCDEE licensing regulations and QRIS systems.
    • Familiarity with CACFP, sanitation requirements, and health/safety protocols.
    • Understanding of child development and developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Skills:
    • Strong interpersonal, communication, and team leadership skills.
    • Ability to build relationships with families, staff, and community partners.
    • Effective time management, organization, and problem-solving capabilities.
    • Computer proficiency including Google Suite and Microsoft Office.
  • Abilities:
    • Ability to provide direct supervision and coaching to classroom staff in collaboration with the Preschool Director.
    • Capable of making sound decisions in the absence of the the Director.
    • Skilled at maintaining program compliance and accurate documentation.

Posted Salary Range

USD $15.00 - USD $17.00 /Hr.
